Nicolaas Van der Waay was born in Amsterdam on October 15, 1855 and died December 18, 1936. From 1884 through 1885, Van der Waay traveled to Paris, Rome, and various other Italian cities. He became a student of L.J.A. Koopman at the Rijks Academy in Amsterdam from 1971 to 1875 and again from 1884 until 1890. He was also instructed by A. Allebe and B. Wijnveld. In 1880, Van der Waay received the Willink van Collen award. From 1891 to 1925 he was a professor at the Rijks Academy in Amsterdam. Living and working in Amsterdam throughout his life, Van der Waay painted watercolors, figurative work, and cityscapes. In 1879 he collaborated with H.J. Haverman then in 1879 with E.S. Witkamp and in 1886 painting wall decorations and ceiling paintings. He also was an illustrator for Elseviers and the Polie news in Amsterdam. He was a member of Arti et Amiciteae in Amsterdam and gave painting instruction to F.H. Abbing, W.O.J. Amesz, M.E.G. Ansingh, and F. Bakker to name a few.
